Regular courses

Our Introductory Modern Chinese I is especially designed for people who have not previously learned Chinese or have very little background knowledge of Chinese. Introductory Modern Chinese II and Introductory Modern Chinese III are offered subsequently. Check the details of these courses here

These Introductory Courses cover the following topics:

While all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are covered in these regular introductory courses the main focus is on a communicative approach where we seek to develop the listening and speaking skills of participants. A key design aspect of all these courses is the integration of language and culture- in other words the Confucius Institute’s courses offer language learning that is contemporary and illustrative of how the language and culture of China are integral. A wide range of resources- including books and web based services are used in the courses. The Confucius Institute also has a range of resources available at its office including magazines, small books and electronic media (DVDs etc).

Additional tuition can be arranged to help those who have missed classes. Further, for those participants who wish to practise their Chinese language between lessons, the Confucius Institute facilitates a language exchange program- this is a program where we are able to put you in contact with International students at QUT from China who wish to improve their English- and for a short period each week you agree to assist each other in language learning.

For information on all these programs please refer to our Contacts page.

For those people in the community who wish to refresh their language – perhaps they have not used the language for some time or feel they would like some more advanced interactions using the language, a speaking group called Renovating Chinese has been organised. Contact Yi Shen for details.

Customised courses

Specially designed language and culture courses are also available for different client groups. We are able to develop courses of various length, workshops and seminars dealing with a wide range of topics relevant to undertaking business in china and engaging with chinese clients. For these courses we recommend and integration of topics such as Business Etiquette in China and Living and Doing Business and Research in China with some basic language development.
